A locksmith is needed
My friend Ken dropped me off after work, a favor for which I am always grateful. I hung up my key on the little parrot by the door, dropped off my laptop bag, wandered into the kitchen to see what I needed, then headed out the door to do some grocery shopping, grabbing my reusable bag on my way.
Did ya see what I did there? I forgot to take my house key on my way out. I didn’t notice my...
My normal workday morning routine
The first alarm goes off at 4:30 AM; my iPhone by my bed, showing with a dim black text on silver grey background the current time, overlaid with the standard iOS popup message:
Early alarm! [Snooze / OK]
I normally hit [Snooze], then [OK] 9 minutes later when it goes off again.
The second alarm goes off at 5:00 AM. I usually get out of bed this time, pausing when I’m sitting up, facing the...
Who deserves a home?
I’ve been in a technical training all week, and the guy sitting next to me is from Alaska. He flew down here specifically for the training, and because his family is in Portland. I call him a kid, which says more about my age than it does his: he’s in his late 20s, maybe, early 30s. Bright guy, knows his stuff, quick-thinker.
I have a few hobbies, but one of them is politics. I...

I used to be better about capturing those moments. I’d jot down a note when the idea hits me as a reminder, on my phone or whatever. Truthfully, what I’d often do is start to jot down a note, and in an effort to completely outline the thought (they were usually...
Creepy encounters
After work, I went for a run on the treadmills in the exercise room. After sweatin’ for a while, I went to the locker room to shower and change, and during this activity, an old guy in a sweater and jeans and sneakers, maybe in his late 50s, early 60s, holding a small nylon gym bag, walked in, quickly followed by another guy.
The second guy I recognized as a fellow employee, and this second...
Things I liked about 2010 and things I didn't
If today is any indication, I will spend 2011 running races, chatting up (but not asking out) cute women, napping, overeating a little bit each day, and writing blog posts.
Setting aside the bad parts of 2010, I did achieve a few things that I’m proud of. I kept up my D&D campaign. I spent much more time with my friends than I have in the past. I learned how to cook chile verde, black...
